Between late summer pleasures and winter anticipation
An autumn hiking tour is something very special. Gone are the hot summer days. Fresh air cools the day. The morning dew is glittering in the late summer morning sun and the mist is settling in the valleys. The nature changes its colour at this time of the year and covers the mountains in various colours. If you love hiking you should go for a hike now: perfect conditions with comfortable temperatures and amazing panoramic views.
While hiking during the summer heat can be exhausting, the mild temperatures in autumn ensure you wont overheat. The main season is over and there are not a lot of other hikers in the mountains. The autumn is the best time of the year for discovering the nature and enjoying the unforgettable views. Unwind. Relax. Enjoy the peace.
In September and in October, countless guided autumn-hikes will show you the most beautiful sides of the "Salzburger Land". Huts, alps and the mountain railways are still open and will ensure unforgettable hiking experiences.
Everyone who wants to discover the various hiking paths in and around Saalbach-Hinterglemm is in for a treat: 400 kilometers of mountain trails. Comfortable hikes through beautiful valleys or challenging tours towards the mighty peaks. Hiking in autumn has a lot of advantages: steady weather, unforgettable views and almost empty mountainslot of other mountaineers around. Time for peace and quietness right in the middle of the alpine nature. A lot of hikers feel like the journey is the destination; with a some of the tours taking between 6 to 10 hours we totally agree.
One thing you should definitely experience during your stay in Saalbach-Hinterglemm is the feeling of standing on the top of a mountain and watch the sun rise above the valley. If you are not really a fan of getting up in the middle of the night you are in luck in autumn; we recommend to be on the mountain between 6.30 a.m. and 7 a.m. A popular tour is the hike in the "Talschuss", either onto the top of the "Saalkogel" or the "Tristkogel". The tour onto the "Saalkogel" is approximately 14 kilometers long and will take you about 3-4 hours. In the morning hours you will have unbelievably clear views. The breathtaking view onto the "Wilden Kaiser" and the "Leoganger Steinberge" will reward the having-to-get-up-early. If you are in luck and the weather conditions are good, you will see as far as the "Hohe Tauern". All sunrise hikers should be prepared for cooler temperatures, wear good hiking boots and bring a torch light. On the hike back down you should make a stop for a delicious breakfast on the "Ossmann Grundalm", the "Saalalm" or the "Lindingalm". Coffe and pastries with a view - after all good food is also an important part of a vacation in Austria.
For everyone hiking with children we recommend a break on the "Lindingalm" - endless possibilities to discover, play with and having fun. Little adventurers will definitely love it there.
Beginners and families with little children mostly prefer a more comfortable hike while fully enjoying the beautiful nature and the countless alpine huts for little breaks. Mountain peaks are not really suitable for beginners and little kids. Therefore its good that the Austrian Alps also offer a lot of more suitable hiking trails.
Hiking the "Glemmtal" with the kids turns the journey itself into the reward. Especially when hiking with little ones you should avoid long and steep trails. It is also important to plan enough breaks for snacks and discoveries off the beaten tracks. A perfect spot for a hiking break is the "Forsthofalm" on an altitude of 1.500 meters offering gorgeous views and delicious food. Also the "Lindingalm" with its adventure playground and the "Teufelswasser" makes the time fly by. And on the way back take a little detour through the woods, who knows, maybe you will even find some mushrooms.
The best time of the year for long hikes is either the spring or the autumn. Mild temperatures ensure a pleasant hike without sweating too much. Two very special trails for hikers with a lot of power of endurance are the "Seven Summits of Saalbach-Hinterglemm" and the "Home of Lässig Walk". The "Home of Lässig Walk" is very exhausting and time-consuming, but on the other hand also very "lässig" a.k.a. cool. On an altitude of 1.700 meters you can take deep breaths and gaze at the beautiful summits close-by and also at the whole "Glemmtal". 22 kilometers of pure hiking joy. How about a little break on the hike back? A piece of cake and a cup of coffee on either the "Liningalm" or the "Ossmann Grundalm" will give you enough power for the way back.
We only recommend these long hikes for experienced hikers and summiteers. A well packed backpack and an excellent preparation in regards to the planning of the tour as there are no operating mountain huts on the way up to the peak. Also the weather can change quickly and these changes need to be kept in mind.
