Between late summer pleasures and winter anticipation

Hiking pleasures in autumn

Hiking in autumn is something very special. The hot days of summer are over. The cool air refreshes the day. The morning dew glistens in the Indian summer, autumn sun and mist settles gently in the valley. Nature changes at this time of the year and bathes the mountain in a blaze of warm colours. If you go hiking in autumn, you will experience perfect conditions: a pleasant climate and the best foresight.

While the summer heat can make hikes difficult, the mild temperatures in autumn make long, high hikes possible. The high season is over and you only see a few hikers along the way. The mountain comes to rest. Anyone who spends their hiking holiday in Austria knows that autumn hiking or hiking in spring make the best tours possible. An ideal travel time to be on the trail of nature and to enjoy the Alps holistically in the panoramic cinema. Arrive. Come to rest. Experience pure moments of well-being.

Here in Saalbach-Hinterglemm you don't have to cross the Alps to get your money's worth. Our Hotel Oberschwarzach is at your disposal with many extras and an active programme as an ideal base camp for adventures.

In September and October there are numerous guided autumn hikes through the Salzburg region in Austria. There are still huts, alpine pastures and mountain railways open, which sweeten the autumn mood.

Autumn hikes surrounding Saalbach-Hinterglemm

If you want to explore paths in and around Saalbach during your hiking holiday, you can let off steam on a total of 400 kilometers of hiking trails. Leisurely hikes through the beautiful valleys or challenging tours to high alpine pastures and mighty peaks. Those who go on vacation in Austria usually come to the country for hiking. Autumn is the ideal season for this. The weather is stable, damp meadows smell intense, the view is immense and hiking trails are less well traveled. Time for rest and prudence in alpine nature. For many hikers, the journey is the goal. No wonder, because many hiking trails take 6 to 10 hours to walk.

Towards the sun: sunrise hikes in autumn

Sunrise hikes are particularly popular. If you are not an early riser, you have a good chance in autumn and in September and October you only have to be on the mountain between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. A popular tour is the autumn hike at the end of the valley to enjoy the sunrise on the Saalkogel or Tristkogel. The circular tour to the Saalkogel is about 14 kilometers long and takes about 3-4 hours. The visibility is best in the morning hours. The view of the Wilder Kaiser and the Leoganger Steinberge are worth getting up early for. When the weather is good, you have a clear view of the Hohe Tauern. Those who hike into the sunrise should prepare themselves for cooler hours, wear sturdy shoes and have a flashlight in their luggage. Breakfast can then be enjoyed on the descent to the Ossmann Grundalm, the Saalalm or the Lindlingalm. Coffee and pastries with a view - an important aspect of a holiday in Austria. After all, feasting is part of a hiking holiday.

If you are traveling with children, you should definitely stop off at the Lindlingalm, because there is a lot to discover, play and try out. Little adventurers have the most fun here.

Long-distance hiking at the end of the valley

Spring and autumn are recommended as the best travel times for long-distance hiking. Mild temperatures make the hiking tour pleasant. As further hiking trails we recommend the "Seven Summits of Saalbach-Hinterglemm or the "Home of Lässig Walk". The Home of Lässig Walk is very strenuous and time-consuming, but also quite casual. At an altitude of 1700 meters you can take a deep breath and you will be rewarded with an immense view of the surrounding mountains of the Alps and over the entire Glemmtal. 22 hiking kilometers and pure nature. On the way back, a stop at a rustic hut is a must - a piece of cake and a cup of coffee to strengthen yourself on the Liningalm or Ossmann Grundalm.

However, the long-distance hiking trails are only recommended for experienced hikers or summiteers. A well-packed backpack and proper tour planning are important, as there are no serviced huts on the way up. Changes in weather can be surprising, especially in autumn, and must be considered.

Hikes for the whole family

Beginners or families with small children prefer to go hiking at a leisurely pace, enjoy nature to the fullest and build in enough time for snacks and stays in the alpine pastures. Hiking destinations that are high up have their special appeal, but are not suitable for beginners or small children. The Alps in Austria can also be explored more comfortably, individually and with a lot of joy on the hiking trip.

When hiking with children in the Glemmtal, the path becomes the goal. Tours that are too long or too steep should be avoided, especially with children. The walking time is significantly longer with children and can sometimes take twice as long as that of an adult. So there should be time for small discoveries along the way and for enough snacks. If you hike casually through the Glemmtal, you can take a longer break, for example on the Forsthofalm. This is at around 1500 meters above sea level and allows you to feast with an impressive view of the surrounding nature of the Alps. A second destination can be the popular Lindlingalm with adventure playground and Teufelswasser. Here in particular you can spend a lot of time, because there is a lot for children to discover. A hike on holiday can be so beautiful if you have enough provisions and a thirst for adventure. You can even look for treasures in the woods, after all autumn is mushroom time.

If you don't like hiking alone, you can take part in a guided hike. These hikes also take place in groups. Just ask us at the hotel for more information on this, we will provide information about hiking offers in our region.

Of course, the Alps can also be explored on an e-bike. You can find the best tips for this here.
